thought of the day: while on the airplane i was thinking, why do airplane seatbelts have the pull up buckle system while cars have the push button buckle system? i was debating with myself the pros and cons of each. both have a push and snap in system. the real only difference i could think of was the push button release or the pull release. both i would think have the strength to withstand a crash and hold you tight and snug. so let's say your car is about to blow up and you're in the state of panic, would a push button or pull system be easier to use? honestly, i think all seatbelts should include a pair of scissors close by and have a sign that says 'break in case of emergency'. how many times have you heard about people stuck in their car because their seatbelt was jammed.

thought of the day: why is the term donating scissors pair? so would 1 scissor be only have of it? to me scissors look like a pair of knives bolted together in the center. i guess the origin of scissors was something like that where the guy that invented it was using a pair of knives or swords and cutting stuff (like people's head) and hence the phrase 'a pair of scissors'.

wow, it's the 1st of july already. only going to be here for less than 10 days. my auto shipper came today and took my car already. so next time i see my civic, it'll be in seattle.

sorry bout not posting for the past few days, been busy and tired.

my brother and a couple of his friends left for anime expo yesterday morning. they actually got a hotel room and are planning to stay there all 4 days. can't really believe they did that since anaheim is less than an hour drive away. dont really get why they're staying there. he's not even that hardcore of an anime fan.

last nite, sueon invited me to go grab a drink. we ended up at abc cafe and chatted for hours. it was really fun. i found another person that had very similar views on alcohol and clubs to me. our chats ranged from social networking to how time seemed go by faster as we aged. it's been a long time since i've had such a great chat. we then got a call from joehk and we met up their other group at garden. glendia, antegra, kcbabe and a bunch of her friends were also there. they just got back from clubbing and you could see how that 1 shot of vodka did to glendia. we also bumped into cindy au yeung (i think that's her name) and tiffany hyunh there too. oh yah! at abc cafe, marco (tennis coach) and christina jeong also showed up. i guess cafes are a popular place for kids these days to goto at nite. hehe.

so decathanerd came back for this weekend (unfortunately ohfuee couldn't cause he's working this weekend). cari, decathanerd, and i went to little tokyo for dinner tonight, but unfortunately the restaurant cari wanted to goto, shabu shabu, was also taking a break this weekend. we ended up going to another restaurant in the plaza which ended up pretty good.

so back to my europe story. my next stop was rome. we had to wake up early that morning, so early the underground (subway) hasn't even started yet. i think we got up and was @ the bus stop by 4:15am. this was the 1st time either of us rode the bus so we weren't too sure how it worked, but at the end, everything worked fine. it took us quite awhile to get to heathrow. check-in went through fine and in a bit, i signed onto t-mobile wireless network (£5/hr) and chatted and checked my email and etc. you may be wondering why i've been going online so much despite the high cost. reasoning behind that was i was also coordinating my move to seattle and i had to do it before i got back.

the flight to rome went pretty smoothly, though the stamp i got on my passport was a bit light. it's fun to get stamps on my passport. hehe. the instructions for getting to our hostel was to take a teravision shuttle. however, after asking a few people, they couldn't really direct us to this particular shuttle. after awhile, a kind customer assitant came up and directed us to the right place. and in no time, we were on our way to plus camping roma. the place was actually really nice. right across from them, there was a supermarket. we actually got our own room + bathroom all to ourselves. they even had a swimming pool which we got to swim in after a hot day of walking.

first day, we decided to walk around, check out the tourist info cetner, figure out our plan of action, and just walk around the city. we stopped by san crispo, proclaimed the best gelato in rome. their gelato was really really good. we hit the fountana di trevi and i threw 2 pence coins in. we had dinner @ mario's. their pizza was excellent and that waitress was really kind, though our langauge barrier seem to have created some confusion. oh yah, 1 thing about italy. they hate credit cards. pratically no where accepted it. it's a very cash-based society. we hit the popolo plaza afterwards and walked all the way to the top of napoleone pincio plaza way and got an awesome view of rome. we then called it a day.

rome's subway system was called the metro and it only costed 1 euro for 75mins (bus + metro) or 4 euros for the entire day. they had these mini bus which were really cute. the next day, we hit tazza d'oro and got a cup of a cappaucino latte. it's really kewl how their coffee system works (similar to the gelato system later we found out). you buy what you want at the cashier first and you get a receipt which you take to the counter and they make your coffee there. quite a efficient system. people can also leave tips for the bar tenders. we then drop by the pantheon. did you know the pantheon has a big hole on the top and when it rains, water is allowed to come in and there's 26 or some amount like that of holes on the bottom which leads to the gutters and ultimately outside. i thought that was an awesome design for such a big structure and would've love to see it when it was pouring (which it did, but i wasn't there). that nite, i got myself some bread and salami for dinner.

the next day, we went to the vatican city. we checked out the vatican museum and the sistine chapels were awesome! parts of it were drawn so well i couldn't really tell if it was a painting or if it was actual structures that bordered the paintings. the museum was a lotta fun. we stopped by the st peter's church next. we went to the top of st peter's dome and got another great view of rome. it was a really long hike, i think over 500 steps, but it was worth it at the end. the hike down was a lot easier. the church was really big and beautiful and there were tons of places where sunlight shot down in beams.

the next day, we visited the coloseum. to our surprise, it wasn't as big as i thought it to be. gladiator sure gave us the wrong impression of the size. much of the coloseum's inside are left in ruins. you can't even make out where the people used to sit anymore. it turns out however, that the underground passage ways for the gladiator's entrace to the coloseum are in fact real. we then visited the foro romano and the palantino, both gardens and ruins of roman structures, which suddenly it started to rain.

you've probably heard of the story of how rome started, two twin brothers, remus and romulus founded the city of rome. but did you know that they were brought up by a she-wolf. we saw a ton of statues which have a 2 boys sucking from the bottom of a wolf. turns out to be this story. hehe.

we went up to the campidoglio as our final thing we did in rome and saw the statue of marcus aureilus. quite different from the movie gladiator ;p. this ends my story of rome. next up, florence.

got this thread from /. : Hackers, Spelling, and Grammar?. after you click it, you may want to change threshold to 5 and click change (if you just want to read the best comments). the main topic of discussion is how important is grammar and spelling. when people use 'should of' instead of 'should've', is it really that bad if it got the idea across. i'm personally think language is ever-evolving and never really cared much about grammar and spelling (as you can tell from the way i write my entries ;p). as long as it got the idea across, i think language has done its job. i understand spelling and grammar are here to make it easier for more people to understand, but if everyone understands, is it still wrong to use it that way? i mean english itself already has tons of weird exceptions which probably started with people mis-using the language and that's stuck with english. i know that many people get annoyed with improper language usage and some to the point (even sometimes myself) who think the writer's level isn't up to par and don't take his writing seriously, but ultimately in this world of SMS and quick responses, i think english is about to have a major do-over. The purpose of language is communication. The reason we talk is so that we can communicate with one another. When someone says "should of" instead of "should have," most seasoned English speakers understand exactly what that phrase means. Communication has happened, and the language has served its purpose. This happens all the time in common English. Example: Goodbye. I do not attack people who use this nonsensical grammatically poor word. You see, it originates from "God be with ye." Goodbye is an obvious grammatical distortion that has taken hold as a normative part of English language. So will "should of" as has "aint" as done as well.

got this article from /. : Japanese sets new mathematics record for reciting 'pi'. A 59-year-old Japanese psychiatric counselor set a world record of sorts Sunday by reciting "pi," or the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, to 83,431 digits. apparently there's a organization in charge of this: Pi World Ranking List. but over 80,000 digits!?! wow! this guy must've been really bored.

got this article from yahoo: Man who lived in Kenyan airport gets UK citizenship. In a real-life African version of Tom Hanks' 2004 Hollywood hit "The Terminal," Sanjai Shah, 43, has been eating cafeteria food, sleeping on plastic transit lounge chairs, and showering in arrival hall toilets since May last year.

got this article from yahoo: Thai fishermen catch and eat record-sized catfish. Fishermen in northern Thailand have caught the biggest catfish on record -- a 646-pound (293-kg) giant the size of a grizzly bear -- and eaten it, the WWF and the National Geographic Society said on Wednesday. taken from /., from the same river, giant stingrays also exist. as sueon said, some toxic material or super growth material must be entering that river.
