thought of the day: first told to me by my dad, but did you know that USA is the 2nd largest crude oil producer in the world, producing 8.84 million barrels per day. too bad we consume about 20 million barrels per day, hence why we need to stick our noses into middle eastern affairs. here's the United States Country Analysis Brief.

pya's been really laggy today and has been causing my page to load rather slowly. so i've disabled my pya hack for now. if the pya images don't load, just im me and i'll fix it.

finally bought the rest of my computer parts today and built my htpc (home theater pc). it consists of the following:

  • Shuttle XPC SK43G - $174
  • AMD Sempron 2800+ - $52
  • PNY 512MB PC2700 DDR RAM - $24
  • Seagate 160GB SATA 8MB 7200RPM - $80
  • Lite-On DVD-ROM - $0 (pulled from old system)
  • AT&T Wireless 802.11g PCI Card - $10

it's pretty sweet! and i've gotten my anime/movies to play fine on my big screen tv and utilizing my surround sound amplifier/speaker system. so my total comes out to be ~$340 + tax - rebates = ~$370. not bad for a small form factor pc. i was actually thinking of getting the mac mini, but because it ran mac osx and didn't have any expandibility (like a pci wireless card), i've decided to built my own. saved over $150 too! too bad i have about $100 tied up in rebates right now just for this system. oh well.

oh yah, while i was @ fry's today, i bumped into lilxpsyduck. he came to return a motherboard which didn't work in his system. he actually thinks fry's has a nice return policy. guess everyone has a different opinion about them.

thought of the day: ever wonder why a spelling bee has the word bee in it? i was watching a trailer, something on spelling bees which got me to google the origin of the term: What is the origin of the term spelling bee?. One possibility is that it comes from the Middle English word bene, which means "a prayer" or "a favor" (and is related to the more familiar word boon). In England, a dialectal form of this word, been or bean, referred to "voluntary help given by neighbors toward the accomplishment of a particular task."

went backpack shopping today. these backpacks are expensive! decided to check on ebay. prices were a bit cheaper, but since i needed it by next tuesday, i contacted the seller if they could meet up. one of the sellers responded that they could gaurantee delivery by monday since he lived somewhere in socal. so i ended up getting the Everest 5400ci.

was going through apple trailers and noticed that the little boy that plays charlie in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is the same little boy that plays peter (pan) in Finding Neverland, which Johnny Depp is also in both.

got this info from /. : for those that own a generation 1, 2, or 3 ipod, the apple finally reached a settlement for that class action regarding their battery failures. gen1/2 has the option of getting $25 check or $50 apple store GC. gen3 has the option of getting the battery replaced or $50 apple gc. pretty good i guess. more info @ Apple iPod Settlement.

thought of the day: i was watching a chinese movie "elixir of love" earlier today and noticed they were playing hopscotch back in ancient china. got me curious to figure where hopscotch originated. turns out it wasn't china. according to Streeplay.com: Hopscotch began in ancient Britain during the early Roman Empire. The original hopscotch courts were over 100 feet long! Can you imagine that? They were used for military training exercises.

got this from howardsforums. first read the latest entry (May 12th, 2005) from this blog: ToTo247's Xanga Site. also, note how consistent the user has posted almost everyday. then read this article: Victim's E-journal led to slay suspect. very sad story indeed. when i read it, it sent a chill down my spine.

got this article from yahoo: Police Say Man Stealing Gas Used Lighter. A tip for would-be gasoline thieves. When stealing gas in the dark, don't use a lighter to see how you're doing. let your imagination go wild when you think what happened next.

got this article from yahoo: 'Bad' odours cause bad driving - survey.
